Talking Points: Are Temu and Shein’s fashion deals too good to be true?

MINNEAPOLIS — One survey says consumers will spend on average $985 dollars on holiday items this year. But with inflation and interest rates high,  low prices are a huge draw, and no one has lower prices than two relatively new retail giants Temu and Shein.

Tonight in Talking Points, Esme Murphy learns more about the companies and finds out if the low prices are for real. And what about quality?

Talking Points: Are Temu and Shein’s fashion deals too good to be true? (part 1)

Originating from China, both Shein and Temu face questions about their business practices including allegations of forced labor.

Murphy spoke with Tracy Perlman, an executive producer at WCCO, about her experience as a Shein customer. Perlman was attracted by the convivence of the online shopping app, but says returning a product was her biggest problem.

“I’ll buy four or five items, and need to return two of them. And it’s just not worth it for me to go to the post office. So I leave them in the bag,” said Perlman, “I end up donating them or giving them to friends.”

Perlman isn’t alone in her frustrations over returning products. Shein currently has an

Electronic roll crashing on Election Day could have been avoided

The Electoral Commission has found a crash of its eRoll on Election Day was “ultimately avoidable”.

The electronic version of the electoral roll went down shortly after 10am on election day 14 October, and was not fixed until just before 2pm.

While it only affected those casting special voters, many voting centers were already under strain with massive queues, and this caused further delays and confusion.

How the eRoll works

The eRoll is a mobile app developed exclusively for the Electoral Commission and was developed and maintained by IT company Catalyst.

On election day staff primarily used it to search the live electoral rolls for voters who did not have their EasyVote card with them.

“It is an electronic option to do what can also be done by looking up the hard copy rolls in the voting place for electors enrolled by writ day and looking up the index to places and streets to work out which electorate a person lives in.”

What happened on Election Day

Documents released in an OIA to RNZ showed at 9:59am on election day four connections failed – although it was later suggested these were not related to the

Sky News leverages new logo for simple new promo

Sky News, which updated its logo design earlier this month, has found a way to use the new logo as part of a simple, typographically oriented promo.

The promo, which channels the network’s “split” logo design, features a mostly red and white background divided down the middle of the screen.

The spot includes a dramatic musical bed with beats cued to the moment the word to the left of the word “news,” which is rendered in the network’s new typeface, flips through a variety of words such as “good,” “secret” and “brave.”

At certain points the beat is also linked to the colored background switching sides.

When the word “breaking” appears on screen, the color scheme switches to the yellow and black palette the network uses.

Could the Next Generation of Microelectronics Be Made From Coal?

Despite supplying just over a third of global electricity generation, coal’s status as the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel is driving many countries to reevaluate the role that it plays in energy production and national economies.

In a new paper, published in Communications Engineering, researchers suggest that coal could continue to be used to power our modern devices – just in a more creative way. Rather than being used as a fossil fuel to produce electricity, coal can be transformed via a new processing technique into extremely high-purity materials that can be used to build electronic components.

The researchers say that their new research is an effective proof-of-principle and could have significant implications for the semiconductor industry.

The next frontier: 2D electronics

Against a backdrop of demand for increasingly faster, smaller, more powerful electronics, the natural conclusion of such a push is the development of electronic parts from ultra-small materials – possibly just one or two atoms thick. This concept of “two-dimensional electronics” is the limit for electronics miniaturization and promises incredibly small devices that consume tiny amounts of energy but

“Noteworthy was the incorporation of dragon patterns on each ensemble during the runway show, creating a layered and harmonious mirage,” she told Malay Mail via email.

Wang also decided to collaborate with Italian-Brazilian artist Daniela Busarello for the Spring/Summer collection.

“Collaborating with artists has always been a highly anticipated project for us and it made me realize that art is a universal language that transcends boundaries.

Thinking of flying out for a quick getaway but worried about how much a last-minute booking would cost? That’s no longer a problem because, these days, budget carriers offer airfares at incredibly low prices almost all year round — some you can even get at the cost of a large pizza.

Low-cost airline Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, in particular, is offering flights as low as Dh59 to four destinations. This almost-unbelievable rate can be booked for trips scheduled on certain days next month.

Believe it or not, for less than Dh60, you can already travel a thousand miles from the UAE, explore a different culture, and enjoy breathtaking views. That’s a one-way ticket, but flying back would cost the same if you chose the right date.

Here are the four destinations you can fly to for only Dh59 (one-way) in June:

1. Salalah, Oman

This Omani destination has been famous for its lush greenery. In June, the climate may be humid because of the monsoon — but the weather is still cooler than most parts of the region.
